Redwood Free-Net is
an electronic network
put together as a
grass-roots community
project in Mendocino
County. This rural
area of Northern California
has chronic
underemployment. The
timber lands, which
were the traditional
resource, are being
depleted. The mills are
closing.

A group of computer
enthusiasts saw the
coming opportunity for
rural areas if they
could connect to the planet
at large. Some
of us put together a proposal
and some resources
and convinced the County
Library to host a
local messaging system.
Started on faith and
a shoestring budget it
was very successful at
giving our community an
entry level training
ground for telecommunications.
