ID Please

Anyone recognize this bird of prey? TIA.

Thanks to those who helped. It evidently is a Cooper's Hawk. I was not aware that they were successful residents in treeless areas.

  • I don't recognize it. What is it?

  • aopnPat,

Initially, I thought it was a peregrine, but in the books, it looks more like a red-shoulder or a Swainson's hawk. If it is small, it could be a Cooper's hawk if in flight the tail makes an arc, or if straight, a sharp-shinned hawk. Hard to judge size from photo. Where was this picture taken? And what was the terrain?

Thanks for the help. I haven't had the web time to do the research. I think it is a fine looking example of whatever it is, labeled or not.

I'm sending you another shot in flight that may help.
